Feet Management

Runners need to take special care of their feet to ensure comfort, prevent injuries, and maintain their overall running performance. Here's a short summary of how runners should look after their feet:

How to look after your feet

Look after your feet!

  1. Proper Footwear: Invest in quality running shoes that fit well and provide the right support for your foot type and running style. Get professionally fitted at a specialty running store to find the right shoes.

  2. Regular Foot Checks: Inspect your feet for blisters, calluses, or other abnormalities before and after each run. Early detection can prevent minor issues from becoming major problems.

  3. Nail Maintenance: This is one of my most important tips as I suffered during my early ultra years. Make sure you have correctly fitted shoes as a small toe box can lead uncomfortable contact with the shoe leading to nail loss. Nail loss lead me to the Altra Lone Peak of which you can find the review in my blog.

Keep toenails trimmed straight across to prevent ingrown toenails. Avoid cutting them too short to prevent injury.

  4. Hygiene & Socks: Keep your feet clean and dry to prevent fungal infections, like athlete's foot. Use moisture-wicking socks to reduce sweat buildup. My favourite socks by far are from CEP, they are bullet proof and long lasting. You can buy them easily on Amazon https://amzn.to/4cRJquM if you are trail running it is important to have some the ankle covered to stop debris entering and also CEP socks provide a little compression around the ankle. They are good for blister prevention too!

  5. During summer months I like to wear flip flops as much as possible to allow my toes to spread and my feet to breath.

  6. I am also a big fan of Vans, they are great for your feet as well as durable and wear them as much as possible during my down time. I love the Old Skool Classic - check out the prices here https://amzn.to/4gedi7u
