Review: Altra Lone Peak

My favourite trail shoe of all time…

The Altra Lone Peak is akin to wearing your favourite pair of slippers, it does not have the cushioning of the Hoka Speedgoat for example but you substitute plush for overall comfort.

I suffered with loss of toenails after my first few ultras and with fairly wide feet I set off on a quest to find a roomier toe box and stumbled upon the Atra range. As well as having the wider toe box they are a bare foot shoe and have no heel drop*. The idea is that it replicates that natural foot and does not direct your foot unnaturally. Altra is an innovative brand from the US.

I love these shoes as they:

  1. Feel soft and comfortable but not artificial

  2. Transition really well from road to trail

  3. Wear well in summer and winter

  4. Are light

  5. Have lovely soft heel

  6. Have a tough outer toe box for the rigours of trails

  7. Have wide laces for a comfortable fit

  8. I believe they have contributed to reducing injury over the year

  9. They last a long time - including the lugs*

  10. Grippy in wet and dry conditions.

They do take a bit of getting used to but I am definitely a more resilient and improved runner since I found this brand.
